LETOON / Bozoluk

Letoon city is established for the name of Leto, who becomes pregnant from god Zeus and mother of god Apollo and Artemis. This city is the sacred place of Lycia Union and it is in 4km far from Xanthus city. The oldest settlement traces in the city date back B.C. 7th Century. Remains and captured epigraphs show that  here is a religious and political area. Excavations in Letoon ancient city, beginning in 1950, are carried out by French scientists. There are three temples side by side in the sanctuary in the site center. Temple, constructed in Ion order in the most western side and dated as B.C. 3rd Century, is consecrated to Leto; small temple, located in the middle, belongs to B.C.4th Centruy and is consecrated to goddess Artemis and; temple in the east is consecrated to goddess Artemis and; temple in the east is constructed according to Dor order in Hellenistic period and is consecrated to Apollo. Nymphaion, constructed during the period of Emperor Hadrian (A.D. 117-138); and monastery dated as A.D. 4th Century and small exedra, belonging to Hellenistic period, are located in southern-west of the temples. There are remains of Hellenistic and Roman period porches, constructed in the Hellenistic period. Letoon is abandoned in A.D. 7th Century.
