Assos / Behramkale

Assos ancient city is located on a hill, between Tuzla Stream (Satnioesis) and sea, near Ayvacik country, Behramkale village. City enters under the rule of Lydians by beginning from B.C. 560, Persians in B.C 546, Macedonian Empire in B.C. 334,Kingdom of Pergamon in B.C 241, Roman Empire in B.C 133, Eastern Roman Empire in 395 respectively. Assos (Behramkale)includes into Ottoman territories during the reign of I. Murat (1362-1389).Famous philosopher Aristotateles provides philosophy cources in Assos for three years periods between B.C. 348-345 years. City is established on a hill, dominating the sea and land, and walls and gates, belonging to B.C. 4th Century and surrounding the city, have an authentic architecture workmanship. Main entrance gate of the city is in the west. Furthermore, there are also secondary gates. Temple of Athena (B.C. 530), located in Acropolis, is in the door order and with the oldest dor order in Western Anatolia. There is also Murat Hüdavendigar Mosque, constructed during the reign of Ottoman sultan I. Murat, in Acropolis. North stoa of Agora with three floors are located in the south. Moreover, there is a small temple in Agora. Bouleuterion structure is situated in the east of Agora. There is a gymnasion structure, belonging to B.C. 2nd Century, in the northern west of Agora. Theatre building, constructed in B.C. 3rd Century and modified in Roman Age, is located in the south of Agora. Necropolis area is located outside city walls and in the west of Acropolis. Also, remains of wave breaker can be seen in Assos port. There is a bridge, belonging to Ottoman period and constructed in 14th Century, on Tuzla Stream (Satnioeis) in the North of ancient city.
