Korykion Antron / Korykos

Korykos ancient city,located in 15 km east of Silifke, is known as Cennet Cehennem (Korykion Antron) in the region. Highway is passing inside Korykos city. There is a castle, constructed in A.D. 2nd Century, in the seaside. Castle undergoes repair during the reign of Karamanogullari in the first half of 15th Century. There are a church, cistern and building remains in the castle. The other castle is Maiden’s Castle, which is located on an island in 200m off shore and surrounded with walls, which are fortified with eight towers and constructed for military purpose. Castle undergoes repair during the reign of Karamanoğlu II. Ibrahim Bey in 1448. There is a small church and cistern within Maiden’s Castle. Both castles are bounded to each other with a wall inside the sea at that period. Two deep fosses, located in the city, established in the north of highway, are called Cennet and Cehennem. There is Church of The Virgin Mary, constructed in A.D. 5th Century and surrounded with wall, in the great foss, called Cennet. As rise and fall of second foss, located in the north of such great foss, is very difficult and it is risen and fallen by stairs, it is called Cehennem. Remains in Korykos ancient city belong to Roman Period and after Roman period. Walls, surrounding Korykos city, belong to A.D. 1st Century. Building remains such as temple, basilica, monastery church, cathedral and rock tombs and necropolis areas are located in the city.
