Fethiye is established on Telmessos, which is ancient Lycia city. Name of Telmessos is seen firstly in B.C. 5th  Century in the ancient sources. After Alexander’s Empire is broken into pieces,city is ruled by Ptolemaioses in B.C. 323 and enters under the rule of Kingdom of Pergamos in B.C. 323 and enters under the rule of Kingdom of Pergamon in B.C. 189. It is located within Asian State of Roman Empire in B.C. 133. City, which is called Anastasiopolis in B.C. 133. City , which is called Megri for long period, is named as Fethiye in 1934. Roman Theatre for 5000 people, unearthed from Telmessos ancient city, through excavations, belongs to A.D. 2nd Century. Castle behind the city is surrounded with Middle Age walls. The most interest one of Lycia type rock tombs, located in the rocks above the city, is the one, which belongs to Amyntas, and dates back, B.C. 4th Century. Furthermore, Kadyanda, Tlos, Pınara, Sdyma, Letoon, Ksanthos and Patara ancient cities and Saklıkent Canyon; and Kayaköy (Karmilassos), which is an old Greek village around Fethiye, are among the places, required to be visited. Fethiye, having rich historical and natural beauties, unique coves and beaches, becomes the tourism center of the region in the recent years because it has many rest faciliyies and also it is close to Dalaman Airport. Ölü Deniz (Tranquil Sea-Blue Lagoon), which is a piece from paradise with its tranquil sea, a long beach and surrounding forests, is the rest area in 17 km far from Fethiye. Moreover, city becomes focus of interest of parascenders due to paragliding flies, made in the recent years in Baba Mount in Fethiye.
