Silifke / Seleuceia, Turkey

Silifke county, located along Göksu River, is in 8km. far from the sea. However, it makes important progress in tourism in the recent years. Silifke is located on the ancient city. The ancient city is established by I. Seleucus at the beginning of B.C. 3rd Century and the city is called Seleuceia. City, which is included into territories of Roman Empire in B.C. 67, lives its most prime periodin A.D. 2nd and 3rd Centuries. City, which is exposed to Arabian invasions in 7th Century, witnesses 3rd crusade in 12th Century. Silifke enters under the rule of respectively Anatolian Seljuks Empire at the beginning of 13th Century and Karamanoğulları and then Ottomans in 1471. Silifke Castle is located in the immediately vicinity of the city. Castle, which is used in Hellenistic and Roman periods, is repaired subsequently and becomes a Castle of The Middle Ages. There are various structure remains within the castle. Cistern, which is called Tekir Warehouse, is located in the east of castle. Remains of ancient theatre building are located in the east of cistern. Roman Temple, which is located within the city and whose single column reaches today, is constructed in the Corinthian order in A.D. 2nd Century. Roman bridge, which is constructed on Göksu River in A.D. 77-78 years, is destroyed until its foundations except three eyes in the north, and constructed again in 1875. Ave Thekla Church, dated as A.D. 5th Century, is located in 1km. south of Silifke. alahan Monastery,located in 22km north of Mut county, bounded to Mersin province, must have been constructed in the middle of 5th and 6th Centuries. Monastery, which is constructed in front of the cave, is a community of structure, composed of Eastern Church, Western Church, Cave Church, Baptistery Hamam, Cemetery and the other monastery structures.
