Bricks of Pitane floating on the sea…

Çandarlı or Pitane as named in the antique age is one of the most pleasant and quietest holiday resorts of the shores of Izmir… The settlement in Pitane dating back to the 2nd and even 3rd milleniums BC had been one of the most important port cities of these shores since centuries. The famous traveller Strabon tells the following about Pitane in his book “In the Antique Anatolian Geopraphy” translated by Prof. Dr. Adnan Pekman into Turkish: “In Pitane, the bricks float on the surface of the water. In tyrrrhenia (a region in Italy), the same fact is observed because of some volume, it floats. Posedonios tells that he saw bricks made of earth similar to the clay in Iberia, silver is cleaned with it and they float on the surface of the water (probably rotten-stone). After Pitane, you arrive to the Kaikos River…”

From the Antique age to the Ottoman…

The ruins of the antique city and port remained unfortunately under the current settlement. The ruins supposed to belong to Pitane are displayed in the Archaelogy museums of Izmir, Pergamon and Istanbul. The most historical edifice of Çandarlı with the traces from Archaic, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman ages in majestic castle. The traces of bloc stones from the Hellenistic age are noticed on the castle walls presumed to be a built by Genoeses after the 13th century, the castle restored again by the Turks has been given the current form due to the last restoration made in Republic period…

Precious finds of Kyme

Another antique city sharing the same shore with Pitane has been Kyme. Many precious pieces have been discovered in Kyme serving as port to Pergamon. The finds unearthed in Kyme and Pitane are exhibited currently in the Archaeology museums of Izmir, Pergamon and Istanbul…
