Pergamon – Death is forbidden to enter here!

The city of Pergamon is divided into two big spaces; one of them is the Upper Pergamon callled also Acropolis and the Lower Pergamon had been a big medical center set up for the health god Asklepion. The access to the center had been provided through the Viran Gate actually squeezed among the houses in Pergamon. Asklepion had been such a big and important health center that the following phrase had been written on this monumental gate: “The death is forbidden to enter this holy place for the might of the whole gods!” and in fact, the mortal patients and the pregnant women had npt been admitter. In other words, the death in this sacred place had’nt been authorised….

Firs, the patients had been met at this big gate, they had been treated and if they could be cured, they had been authorised to enter. The access to Asklepion had been provided via Via Tecta (Covered Road) and a big theatre, library, mauoleum, fountain and many edifices had been situated here…
