Pergamon: The cradle of psychotherapy…

Althought founded in the 4th century in BC, Asklepion had its glorious days in the Hellenistic age and became as much famous as “the Asklepion of Hippocrates” at Kos Island. Many temples and centers had been built for Asklepion known as the God of Health and Medicine in the antique age. It was admitted that one of the most important of these edifices had been located in Kos and the other situated in Pergamon. Besides the physical treatment in Pergamon, the psychological treatment had been also important and the patients had been encourgaed to see dreams through the healing method through convincing. Pergamon is seen as the home of the psychiatry and psychotherapy. Many famous physicians such as Galenos, Satyros, Flavius, Calos, Cladius and Hermoktrates had worked here. Galenos had proved his mastery as a surgeon with his experimental works carried out on the animals and he had been called “magician” due to his success in healing the wounded gladiators; he had been considered as a great physician with his books of medicine composed of thosands of pages, interesting theories and cure methods valid for centuries. Besides being a physician, he invented many drugs and he was named “the father of pharmacy” in the history…
