Tastes and Sights: A Culinary Journey Through Istanbul

In this guide, we’ve curated a selection of the best local gourmet spots in Istanbul, where you can savor both traditional Turkish flavors and international delicacies. Our recommendations are based on years of firsthand experience as locals, combined with in-depth research from top culinary and travel experts. The locations we’ve chosen are not only renowned for their exceptional food but also situated in neighborhoods where you can explore some of the city’s iconic monuments and sights. While Istanbul’s rich culinary scene offers countless options, we’ve focused on the most authentic and flavorful experiences to share with you.

Giritli Restaurant

Located in the heart of Istanbul’s historic district, just below the Blue Mosque, Giritli offers a warm and inviting atmosphere for both local and international guests. The restaurant takes pride in showcasing the rich culinary history of Istanbul with an exceptional selection of hot and cold mezes. Its charming secret garden provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. While the prices are slightly above average, they vary depending on the menu you choose, offering a memorable dining experience.
Pandeli Restaurant
This iconic and historic restaurant is located in the heart of Istanbul’s Spice Market in Eminönü. Owned by a Rum family (Turkish citizens of Greek descent), Pandeli first opened in 1901 in the Eminönü area and moved to its current location in 1955. Since its inception, the restaurant has welcomed many distinguished guests, including artists, politicians such as Atatürk, and numerous Hollywood stars. With its stunning blue tiles, high domes, elegant chandeliers, and breathtaking views, Pandeli is a true landmark in Istanbul. The menu features a variety of unique dishes, including mezes, börek, and savory pastries, all showcasing the best of Turkish cuisine. The prices are on the higher side, but the experience is well worth it.

Fahri Usta

This charming little restaurant, tucked away in a hidden corner of the Grand Bazaar, is a beloved local gem. Just ask any merchant in the Bazaar, and they’ll likely have visited at least once. Fahri Usta serves classic Turkish dishes at affordable prices, but it’s only open for a limited time each day, primarily for lunch. The restaurant is small, so you may have to wait during busy hours. The menu can vary depending on what’s being served that day, but their köfte (meatballs), fava bean salad, and cacık (yogurt with cucumber and garlic) are well-known favorites.

Olden 1772 Istanbul

Upon entering the beautifully restored historical building in a prime location, your first impression will likely be one of awe. The menu and excellent service will not disappoint as you enjoy the unique atmosphere of this charming old han in Sirkeci. The dishes at Olden 1772 are a modern interpretation of Anatolian and Istanbul cuisine. They offer dishes such as beef cheeks, roasted monkfish, lamb shank, and the chef’s contemporary take on traditional duck. The prices are above average, but the experience is well worth it.

Mahkeme Lokantası

One of our favorite meyhane-style restaurants in Istanbul is this beautifully restored han in the Karaköy neighborhood. The food is always fresh, and both the atmosphere and service are exceptional. While the location can be a bit tricky to find, you can easily walk from the Karaköy tram stop to avoid any confusion with taxi drivers. If the weather permits, we highly recommend dining outdoors, but be sure to book your table in advance. Their dishes are fantastic—our top recommendations include Girit ezmesi (a cheese and pistachio mash), hardallı levrek (sea bass in mustard sauce), and calamari.

Mahir Lokantası

It is a traditional restaurant located in the Osmanbey district of Istanbul, renowned for its classic Anatolian cuisine. The menu features a wide range of dishes, including appetizers, hot entrées, and fresh salads, but it is particularly famous for its delicious içli köfte (stuffed bulgur wheat pockets filled with spiced meat), lahmacun (Turkish pizza), and wood-fired kebabs. The içli köfte is considered among the best in the city. In addition to its savory offerings, Mahir Lokantası is also well-known for its delightful desserts and local delicacies. The pricing is moderate, making it an accessible yet authentic culinary experience.

Akin Balık

Located near the Galata Bridge, Akin Balık is our go-to recommendation for those looking to avoid the higher prices of the restaurants under the bridge. Offering a great selection of fresh fish and seafood, the menu features a variety of local seasonal options. Its affordable prices make it a favorite among both locals and tourists.

Balık Dürüm Mehmet Usta

Balık ekmek (fish sandwich), or literally “fish and bread,” is a beloved Istanbul street food historically popular along the Golden Horn and Bosphorus. This small spot in the Karaköy district is famous for its exceptional fish wraps, which stand out due to a unique spice mix and the careful preparation of the fish, with the bones expertly removed before grilling. If you see a line of people waiting in front of a small, smoky corner on Mumhane Street in Karaköy, you’re likely looking at the famous Balık Dürüm Mehmet Usta. The prices are affordable, making it a popular choice for both locals and visitors.

Karaköy Güllüoğlu

Located in a central spot in Karaköy, this charming place is ideal for enjoying a traditional Turkish breakfast or indulging in delicious desserts. If you’re looking to skip the hotel breakfast, a Turkish breakfast here is a must. Expect plates piled high with a variety of jams, cheeses, eggs, olives, dips, breads, and many other delightful treats. Karaköy Güllüoğlu is the perfect place to experience this rich and flavorful spread at least once.
Sakarya Tatlıcısı
Tucked away on a side street off the famous Istiklal Street in the Taksim area, this charming little dessert shop is renowned for its ayva tatlısı (quince dessert) and traditional Turkish baklava. Pair your chosen dessert with a glass of Turkish tea and enjoy the atmosphere of this half-century-old establishment. The prices are affordable, making it a great spot for a sweet treat.

Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi

Founded in 1871 near the Spice Market in Eminönü, Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi has been a trusted Turkish coffee roaster and seller for over a century. The line for their freshly ground coffee moves quickly, and it’s the perfect place to pick up a bag of authentic Turkish coffee as a souvenir for your loved ones.

Nato Restaurant

For over 50 years, Nato has been serving delicious homemade Turkish meals. Located in Karaköy, this restaurant is a great choice for those looking to experience authentic local cuisine. With fresh ingredients and a strong commitment to excellent service, Nato has become a favorite among both locals and visitors.

Mikla

Located on the top floor of the Marmara Pera Hotel in the Asmalı Mescit neighborhood of Taksim, Mikla is renowned for its sophisticated take on Anatolian cuisine and its breathtaking views of the city. The menu features a variety of meat, fish, and seafood dishes, all presented in a unique blend of traditional Turkish and contemporary styles. Mikla is also recognized on several prestigious lists of the world’s 50 best restaurants.

Ciya Sofrası

Located in Kadıköy on Istanbul’s Asian side, Çiya Sofrası is a seasonal gem known for its consistent quality. The street actually features two Çiya restaurants: one specializes in excellent kebabs, while the other offers a range of unique and lesser-known Anatolian dishes from across Turkey. Chef Musa Dağdeviren is not only a chef but also a culinary anthropologist, collecting recipes from around the country and even publishing a journal on Turkish food culture. The result of his research is a menu filled with rare regional dishes that you’re unlikely to find anywhere else. While the prices are slightly above average, the experience is definitely worth it.

Borsam Taşfırın

Located in three different spots across Kadıköy, Borsam Taşfırın is widely regarded by locals and food experts as serving the best lahmacun (often called Turkish pizza) in the city. Baked in wood-fired ovens, their lahmacun—available with either meat or vegetables—is a must-try. The prices are affordable, making it a great spot for a delicious and authentic meal.

Kanaat Lokantası

Located in Üsküdar on Istanbul’s Asian side, Kanaat Lokantası is a family-run restaurant that has been serving delicious food for over 80 years. Both locals and visitors agree on the exceptional quality of the dishes. Known for its flavorful olive oil-based recipes, the menu also features dishes like chickpeas, stuffed celery, green beans, and chicken pudding. With its affordable prices, Kanaat Lokantası offers a true taste of traditional Turkish home cooking.
