Olympos, Turkey

Olympos ancient city, located in Lycia Region, is a port city, established in Hellenistic period. Name of city appears on the coins,minted in B.C. 2nd Century. City which is established within greeneries and in the mouth of a river, reachinh to the sea, survives in Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, partially Ottoman periods, city losses its importance and is abandoned completely in 15th Century.  Ancient city has acropolis, constructed in Middle Age on a small hill and surrounded with walls. The bridge, which combines two sides on the river,house of Bishop belonging to 6th Century, Roman Period theatre, Colonnaded street, Byzantine basilica, agora and gymnasium remains, memorial tombs, are some of the old structure remains in the ancient city. It is believed that flame, arising from natural gasses and coming out of the ground continuously in these days in Çıralı near Olympos city, belongs to monster Chimaira, living here and spitting fire from breath. Further more, as it is believed that it is a place, belonging to god of forgers Hefaistos, here is accepted as sacred place. Ancient sources inform that there is a temple here. Availability of a church remains here, indicates that here is known as a sacred place and worshipped in the Christianity period.
