The Art of Ebru: Painting on Water

Imagine a canvas made not of fabric, but of water. Colours dance, spread and resist mixing to create mesmerising patterns before being transferred to a solid surface. This is ebru, the traditional Turkish art of painting on water. This ancient discipline combines science, patience and artistic sensitivity. Ebru is more than just a technique; it is a moving meditation and a celebration of the ephemeral that is immortalised on paper.

Ebru originated in Central Asia and was perfected in the Ottoman Empire. It is not only a form of visual art, but also an integral part of Turkey’s cultural heritage and has been recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It’s a dance of pigments and water, where the artist doesn’t “paint” in the conventional sense, but rather guides and moulds the chaos of colours to create harmony.

So, what is Ebru, and how does it work? The Secrets of the Ebru Art

At first glance, the Ebru process seems almost magical, but it is based on scientific principles and the artist’s mastery. Here, we reveal its essential components:

1. Thickened water (kitre)

The key to ebru lies in the liquid ‘canvas’. This is not ordinary water, but a solution thickened with a natural substance called kitre, which is extracted from the tragacanth plant. This increases the viscosity of the water, enabling the pigments to float on the surface instead of sinking. Without kitre, the colours would simply dissolve.

2. Pigments and ox gall

The colours used in ebru are finely ground natural pigments mixed with water and a small amount of ox gall. Ox gall is crucial because it reduces the surface tension of the pigments, enabling them to spread and disperse over the water without immediately mixing with it or each other. The amount of ox gall is a delicate factor that the artist carefully adjusts to control colour dispersion.

3. Tools for the Dance

The artist uses several specialised tools:

Brushes: Traditionally made with rose stems and horsehair, these are used to sprinkle or drip colours onto the kitre surface.

Awl (biz): This is a fine needle or rod that allows the artist to manipulate and drag colours across the water to create intricate patterns such as waves, flowers or abstract shapes.

Combs: These are used to create repetitive and symmetrical patterns, such as the famous ‘battal’ waves.

The creative process: From Liquid to Solid

Creating an Ebru artwork is a fascinating process that requires great concentration.

1. Preparation

The artist pours the kitre solution into a rectangular tray. They prepare their pigments, ensuring they are at the perfect consistency with just the right amount of ox gall.

2. Colour dripping

Using brushes, the artist sprinkles or drops different colours onto the surface of the tragacanth. The pigments spread, forming concentric circles or irregular shapes and creating a colour base.

3. Shaping

Using an awl or combs, the artist gently manipulates the floating colours. It is at this stage that the artist’s vision is realised, transforming the colour spots into intricate designs, from simple yet beautiful patterns such as “battal” (marbled) and “gelgit” (tidal wave), to complex and detailed Ebru flowers such as tulips, carnations and roses, which are the pinnacle of this art form.

4. Transfer

Once the design on the water is complete, a special sheet of uncoated absorbent paper is carefully laid on the surface. The paper absorbs the floating pigments, transferring the design from the water to the solid surface.

5. Drying

The paper is carefully lifted, any excess kitre is removed and the paper is hung to dry. Once dry, the Ebru design is permanent and each piece is unique, as the pattern vanishes once the paper is removed and the water is disturbed.

The varieties and uses of ebru: beyond decoration

Ebru is not a static art form. Over the centuries, it has evolved into various techniques and found multiple applications.

Ebru Battal

The most basic style, forming the foundation for all others. Colours are dropped freely onto the surface to create a marbled effect.

Ebru Gelgit

This is created by drawing an awl back and forth over a Battal design to form waves.

Ebru Şal

A technique that uses a comb to create ‘peacock’ patterns.

Ebru Çiçekli (Floral Ebru)

Considered the most advanced level, where the artist manipulates colours to form detailed images of flowers emblematic of Turkish culture, such as tulips, carnations, poppies and roses.

Ebru Hat (Calligraphy Ebru)

A sophisticated technique in which calligraphy is written on ebru paper or created directly on the water before transfer. Often, a thin layer of gum arabic is used so that the calligraphy ‘resists’ the ebru colours and remains white.

Historically, ebru paper was used for bookbinding, decorating important documents and as backgrounds for calligraphy and miniatures. It was also used as an artwork in itself. Today, its applications are as diverse as the artist’s imagination, ranging from framed artworks to the decoration of textiles, ceramics and contemporary objects.

A Journey into Patience and Harmony

Ebru is more than an artistic technique; it’s a philosophy. It requires infinite patience, a steady hand and an eye for detail. Above all, however, it teaches acceptance of limited control and the beauty of the unpredictable. Each Ebru piece is a captured moment, a unique impression of a fleeting dance of colours on water.

In a world dominated by immediacy, the art of ebru invites us to slow down, observe the beauty that emerges from the flow and appreciate the magic of fleeting moments. It is a testament to Turkey’s rich artistic heritage and an invitation to immerse oneself in a world where water becomes a canvas and colours become poetry.
