The map of most important places of Istanbul
The map of most important places of Istanbul

In this daily Istanbul tour, we aim to visit some of the landmarks that are inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list. Four main heritage areas of Istanbul were listed by UNESCO in 1985, and these sites encompass the city’s diverse historical and cultural legacy. The areas include:

  • The Archaeological Park at the tip of the Historical Peninsula
  • The Suleymaniye Quarter
  • The Zeyrek Area
  • The area along the Theodosian Walls

Let’s start our tour with the crown jewels of Istanbul’s historical peninsula: Hagia Sophia and the surrounding landmarks.

Guided Istanbul Tours

Morning:

1. Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya)

We begin our day with a visit to Hagia Sophia, one of the world’s most extraordinary structures. Originally built as a Christian cathedral by Emperor Justinian in 537, it was later converted into a mosque and then museum, now a mosque again. We wander through its majestic halls and marvel at the massive dome, intricate mosaics, and Islamic calligraphy, all symbolizing Istanbul’s complex religious and cultural history.

2. Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Mosque)

Just a short stroll from Hagia Sophia, we head to the Blue Mosque. Built by Sultan Ahmed I in the early 1600s, this mosque is an architectural marvel with its striking blue tiles and impressive prayer hall. We spend some time admiring the mosque’s interior, and take a moment to wander through its spacious courtyard and surrounding gardens.

3. Hippodrome of Constantinople

From the Blue Mosque, we continue our walk to the Hippodrome, once the heart of Byzantine Constantinople. While much of the original structure is gone, important remnants remain, including the Obelisk of Theodosius and the Serpent Column. This was the place for chariot races, political rallies, and public events in the Byzantine era.

4. Grand Bazaar

From the Hippodrome, we make our way to the famous Grand Bazaar. With over 4,000 shops, it is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world. We explore the maze of alleys filled with everything from handwoven carpets to spices, jewelry, and local crafts. It’s the perfect place to get a sense of Istanbul’s vibrant commerce and rich history.

Lunch at a Local Café or Restaurant

We take a break and enjoy a traditional Turkish meal at one of the many local restaurants in Sultanahmet or near the Grand Bazaar. Try some classic dishes like kebabs, mezes, or a freshly made pide (Turkish flatbread with various toppings). Pair it with a refreshing glass of ayran (yogurt drink) or Turkish tea.

After lunch, we head towards Suleymaniye Mosque, one of the most magnificent mosques in Istanbul. Designed by the famous architect Mimar Sinan, this 16th-century mosque is a true testament to Ottoman architectural prowess. The mosque is set atop Suleymaniye Hill, offering stunning views of the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus. We explore the mosque’s interior, as well as the peaceful surrounding complex, which includes a library, a medical school, and the tomb of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent.
