Walking the Historical Neighborhoods of Istanbul

Exploring Byzantine, Ottoman, and Modern Layers of the City

This walking tour explores the historical layers of Istanbul—from the Byzantine era to modern cosmopolitan life in Istanbul. Our focus is on communal spaces such as religious buildings (monasteries, churches, mosques), Turkish baths, cisterns and aqueducts, historical educational complexes, marketplaces, and cemeteries. As we move through indoor and outdoor environments, we discuss the communal roles of these spaces, their architectural features, and their historical development and transformation under different social and political eras.

The walk begins in the historic Greek neighborhood of Fener, continues into Fatih—one of the oldest and busiest parts of the old city—and concludes in Süleymaniye, the traditional Muslim quarter. The tour ends with a visit to one of the greatest masterpieces of Ottoman architecture and engineering: Süleymaniye Mosque.

We will enjoy one lunch break and two coffee/tea breaks at characteristic local shops.
There are no entrance fees for the monuments on the route; only small tips may be expected in some places.
A visit to the Çinili Hamam Museum costs approximately 3USD and is strongly recommended for those interested in bath culture and architecture.
