Revan and Baghdad Pavilion – Topkapi Palace

Revan Köşk

From the Sofa Köşk, we climb up a stairway and on to a path which leads to a terrace with fountain. The firs building at the top of the stairs is the so-called “Revan Köşk”, which Sultan Murat IV had built in the 17th century for the commemoration of his expedition to Revan in Iran. Its inner and outer walls were decorated with magnificent blue and white Iznik tiles. Its doors and shutters show master craftsmanship and are inlaid with mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell and ivory.

Baghdad Köşk

The pavilion on the right of the terrace is the so-called “Bagdat Köşk”, which was ordered built by sultans after his expedition to Baghdad. It was used as a libray for some time. The pavillion stands on a terrace 7m above the garden. It is smilar in architecture, design and decoration to the “Revan Köşk”.

Inside the pavilion to the right of the entrance, is a very beautiful gold-bronzed fireplace, and at the centre is a finely worked silver brazier (mangal) from France, a gift from Louis XIV.
