Topkapi Palace

If You’re Visiting Istanbul for the First Time, Here’s What You Need to Know

Istanbul is not a city you simply visit; it is a city you experience. Standing between Europe and Asia, Istanbul brings together the legacy of the Roman and Ottoman Empires in a way that feels completely unique. From ancient Byzantine monuments to Ottoman palaces, historic bazaars, Bosphorus villages and lively modern streets, almost every corner tells a different story.

For first-time visitors, the best way to understand Istanbul is to explore it as a journey through different layers of history.

Start in the Old City (Suriçi) with Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Sultanahmet Square and the historic streets of Fatih. Hagia Sophia The Architectural Marvels of Hagia Sophia is one of the city’s most unforgettable landmarks, while Topkapi Palace offers a fascinating look into Ottoman royal life. Take a walk around the old Hippodrome in Sultanahmet and then head to the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar, where you can still see people doing the same trades they did hundreds of years ago.

Do not explore Istanbul only for its monuments. Food is an essential part of the experience. During a day tour, try a traditional Turkish breakfast, followed by pogaca (Turkish croissant (very popular breakfast)) or simit, a freshly baked sesame-covered bread ring. For lunch, look for döner, kebab, pide or lahmacun, and save some room for baklava or Turkish delight. Around Eminönü and the Galata area, you can also try balık ekmek (fish sandwich), Turkish tea and freshly brewed Turkish coffee. In the evening, experience a traditional meyhane-style meal or enjoy modern Turkish cuisine around Karaköy and Pera.

After the Old City, continue towards Galata, Karaköy, Beyoğlu and Istiklal Avenue. The contrast here is part of Istanbul’s charm: historic buildings, old passages, contemporary cafés, galleries and street life exist side by side. Then follow the Bosphorus route through Beşiktaş, Ortaköy, Bebek and Emirgan for a completely different side of the city.

One important thing for first-time visitors: be prepared for the heat in July, August and until around mid-September. Istanbul can feel extremely hot, especially while walking through the Old City. Plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning or late afternoon, carry water, wear comfortable shoes and allow time for shaded breaks. A Bosphorus boat ride can also be a refreshing part of your day.

From Roman walls and Byzantine monuments to Ottoman palaces, bazaars, mosques and Bosphorus neighborhoods, Istanbul’s greatest beauty comes from this extraordinary historical combination.

Save this guide before your trip. With the right route, the right food and a little preparation for the summer heat, your first day in Istanbul can become one of the most memorable experiences of your journey.

Bonus: Walk from Gülhane Park to Yenikapı

For a memorable walk, start at Gülhane Park and follow the coastal road towards Cankurtaran, Kumkapı and Yenikapı. Along the way, you’ll walk beside the historic Roman sea walls, with Topkapi Palace adding another layer of imperial history to the route. In Cankurtaran, take a coffee break or lunch breakd at Cankurtaran Social Facilities, a beautiful and relatively little-known spot located just inside the historic walls. Then continue towards Kumkapı and Yenikapı, enjoying the sea along the way.

Once you reach Yenikapı Metro, you can easily continue to many important parts of Istanbul by public transport, including Kadıköy and other areas on the Asian side..
