Gobekli tepe Eastern Turkey daily tours

Embark on a fascinating journey through ancient Mesopotamia, the birthplace of civilization, as we explore Göbekli Tepe, the world’s oldest known archaeological site, along with the historic treasures of Sanlıurfa. This day trip from Istanbul offers a unique opportunity to uncover the mysteries of early human history and the incredible ancient ruins of the region.

Itinerary:

You will be picked up from your hotel or specified address in Istanbul and transferred to either Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen Airport for your flight to Sanliurfa Airport. Upon arrival, meet your licensed guide and begin your journey through time.

First Stop: Gobeklitepe
Your tour begins with a visit to Göbekli Tepe, an awe-inspiring Neolithic site that dates back 12,000 years. Long before the advent of writing or pottery, early humans built this vast ritual complex, making it the world’s oldest known man-made structure. Discovered in the 1960s and excavated since 1995, Göbekli Tepe has revolutionized our understanding of early human history, challenging long-held assumptions about the development of civilization. With its remarkable stone pillars and intricate carvings, this site continues to captivate archaeologists and visitors alike.

Next Stop: Sanlıurfa Archaeological Museum
After exploring Göbekli Tepe, head to the Sanlıurfa Archaeological Museum, which houses a vast collection of artifacts spanning from the Neolithic period to the Crusader era. Among the exhibits, you’ll see relics from Göbekli Tepe as well as Urfa Man, the world’s oldest known life-sized statue. The museum is one of the largest in Turkey and offers invaluable insight into the region’s rich history.

Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum
Next, visit the Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum, located on the site of an ancient Roman villa. This museum is renowned for its stunning mosaics from the 3rd and 4th centuries AD, including the famous Mosaic of Orpheus, which was returned to Sanlıurfa in 2015 after being temporarily taken abroad. The museum beautifully showcases the artistic heritage of the region, with many mosaics uncovered in the area now on display.

Lunch in Urfa’s Old City
Enjoy a traditional Turkish lunch in the heart of Urfa’s Old City, known for its delicious local cuisine, including the famous Urfa kebab and rich, flavorful dishes unique to the region.

Kızılkoyun Necropolis
After lunch, your guide will take you to the Kızılkoyun Necropolis, an ancient burial site dating back to the 2nd to 4th centuries AD. The tombs are carved into the limestone bedrock, and there are over 60 tombs scattered throughout the area, offering a fascinating glimpse into the burial practices of the ancient inhabitants.

Balıklıgöl (The Pool of Abraham)
Next, visit Balıklıgöl, also known as the Pool of Abraham. According to Jewish and Islamic legend, this is the site where the ancient ruler Nimrod threw the prophet Abraham into a fire, which miraculously turned into a pool filled with sacred fish. The serene surroundings of this site make it a peaceful and spiritual stop during your tour.

Urfa Historical Bazaar
Your final stop will be the bustling Urfa Historical Bazaar, a lively market where you can explore traditional crafts, local products, and ancient workshops. The bazaar offers a vibrant atmosphere, allowing you to experience the rich culture of Urfa while browsing for unique souvenirs.

At the end of your tour, you will be transferred to Sanlıurfa Airport for your return flight to Istanbul. Upon arrival, a transfer will take you back to your hotel, concluding your unforgettable journey through ancient Mesopotamia.
